DHS celebrated the opening act of the school year with its annual Spirit Week followed by the Back to School Dance on Fri., Aug. 18 in the Sr. Ambrose Reggio Gym. More than 90% of the student body attended the much-anticipated dance and jammed out together to celebrate another school year.
The theme for this school year, “Dominican High School of Rock,” amped up DHS for Spirit Week, a celebration that included fun activities and a pep rally.
Spirit Week culminate with the BTSD – the Back to School Dance. Eighth grader Emily Anding wasn’t sure about what to expect for her first BTSD. “The assembly and skits leading up to the BTSD made it seem really fun,” she said. “I ended up dancing all night with my friends and having a blast!”

At the dance, students rocked out as DJ Kenny spun tunes in the gym. In Dominican tradition, students costumed in their grade’s color to show true school spirit. From eighth grade “Purple Rain” to red rockin’ juniors, everyone was decked out in purple, green, yellow, red or blue.
“Every year, it is so fun to plan a costume with my friends that represents our grade,” junior Elizabeth Scaffidi said. “This year we dressed up as Minnie Mouse to show our junior spirit.”
The annual costume contest concluded the dance as students strutted their stuff down the runway for the first-place prize. Senior Blue – a giant cardboard airplane with folding wings and installed lights – took off to the top as winner of the costume contest. Senior Alison Dupre, one of the nine pilots responsible for the creation of Senior Blue, said, “The BTSD is one of my favorite Dominican events, and every year we brainstorm on what we can do to top last year’s costume.”

The seniors’ celebration was bittersweet. “All the memories of the past four years flashed by as my class stood in a big circle at the end of the night,” senior Nina Casanova said. “My last BTSD was a great way to kick off my final year at Dominican.”
Preceding the BTSD, the Student Council hosted a series of activities during Spirit Week. On Monday, Aug. 21, students donned pictures of their favorite artists and musicians under their nametags participating in Musical Monday. They also tested their geology skills at Rock Trivia (pun intended) on Wednesday and rocked out in Alumnae Hall to a game of Guitar Hero on Friday.
Spirit Week is just another tradition that every DHS girl treasures. It not only brings the school together to enjoy a night of dancing and singing but welcomes new and returning students alike into a new year.
“It was fun to watch girls from every grade have fun together,” E-Board secretary Katie Mouton said. “Spirit Week is one of my favorite events of the school year because everyone is so excited to start their next chapter of Dominican.”
